Remembering February 28, 1820 – Treaty 22 & Treaty 23
On this day, February 28, 1820, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation signed Treaty 22 and Treaty 23 with the Crown. Under Treaty 22, the Mississaugas ceded their lands at 12 and 16 Mile Creeks, along with the northern and southern portions of the Credit River Reserve.
Later the same day, Treaty 23 was negotiated, where the central portion of the Credit River Reserve, along with its woods and waters, was ceded to the Crown for £50.
These treaties represent an important chapter in our history, one that continues to shape our community and our connection to the land. As we reflect on this day, we honor our ancestors and their resilience, and we continue to work toward strengthening our community and preserving our heritage.
