Posted on June 6, 2025

Film Synopsis:
This film follows Grandma Jo, an Anishinaabe elder who finds herself struggling to protect her grandchildren from repeating cycles of trauma that have affected their family for generations. Her home has become increasingly chaotic, with teenagers smoking, constantly fighting, damaging property, and a daughter caught in addiction. At the core of the story is Jo’s relationship with her granddaughter Alana, a 14-year-old who’s quietly spiraling, isolating herself, numbing her pain, and secretly seeking validation from older men with harmful intentions. When Jo sees Alana drifting into dangerous territory, she begins seeing visions of Winona, her childhood friend who disappeared during their time at residential school. Acting as Jo’s conscience, Winona gently yet persistently pushes Jo to confront the truths she’s long kept hidden, urging her to see how silence only deepens her family’s struggles. Jo must ultimately summon the courage to share memories she’s spent her life hiding, discovering that the greatest resilience comes from breaking silence and confronting truths we’ve feared most.
