The MISSISSAUGAS OF THE CREDIT FIRST NATION is accepting applications for the full-time, permanent position of Peacekeeper (Ogichidaa/Ogichidaakwe).
We are seeking two (2) dedicated, community-minded Peacekeeper (Ogichidaa/Ogichidaakwe) who will play an essential role in promoting community safety, wellness, and trust throughout MCFN. Reporting to the Peacekeeper Supervisor, this position supports community members through proactive patrols, safety initiatives, crisis response, relationship building, and community engagement. This opportunity is ideal for someone who is passionate about public safety, cultural values, and making a meaningful impact within the community.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Conduct foot and mobile patrols throughout the community and MCFN properties to promote safety and deter crime, vandalism, theft, and harm.
- Build positive relationships and trust with community members through a visible and approachable presence.
- Respond to safety and wellbeing concerns, perform wellness checks, and provide support to vulnerable community members.
- Complete incident reports, occurrence reports, and maintain accurate daily logs of activities and observations.
- Collaborate with MCFN programs, health and social services, victim services, law enforcement, and emergency response partners.
- Provide safety information, resources, and referrals to community members.
- Support and provide security at community events, functions, and gatherings.
- Apply de-escalation techniques to prevent conflict and maintain a safe environment.
- Ensure compliance with MCFN policies, procedures, and legal requirements while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Qualifications & Experience
We are looking for candidates who bring:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent and must be at least 18 years of age.
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence with a clean driving record and
- Ability to obtain a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to maintain detailed records and prepare accurate reports.
- Knowledge of crime prevention, community safety, crisis management, and emergency response practices.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and integrity.
- Physical and mental ability to perform patrol, field, and community safety duties, including evenings, weekends, holidays, on-call shifts, and occasional overtime.
- Training, certification, or experience in Police Foundations, Security, Community Safety, conflict resolution, de-escalation, crisis intervention, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is considered an asset.
- Understanding of Anishinaabe culture and the Seven Grandfather Teachings, with experience working in Indigenous communities or community-based safety programs considered an asset.
