Family Support Worker

The MISSISSAUGAS OF THE CREDIT FIRST NATION is accepting applications for the full-time, permanent position of Family Support Worker.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and community-minded professional who is passionate about family wellness and supporting Indigenous children and families. The Family Support Worker provides direct support, advocacy, and referral services to MCFN members involved with the child welfare system while promoting healing, resilience, and family preservation through culturally responsive approaches that reflect Anishinaabe values and traditions. 

Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:

  • Support child protection investigations, child placements, and supervision processes involving MCFN members.
  • Represent MCFN as the Band/First Nation Representative during child welfare court proceedings.
  • Accompany Child Protection Workers during investigations involving MCFN children and families.
  • Assist with family placements and collaborate with child welfare agencies to support children and families.
  • Provide direct support and advocacy to individuals and families involved with the child welfare system.
  • Deliver support services related to parenting, healthy relationships, anger management, and family wellness through home visits and office meetings.
  • Facilitate support groups, individual sessions, and community-based programming that promotes healing and connection.
  • Coordinate meetings, establish agendas, and connect families with community resources and service providers.
  • Attend case reviews, case conferences, staff meetings, and supervision meetings while maintaining accurate and timely documentation.
  • Collect statistical data, contribute to service planning, and support the delivery of effective family support programs and services.

Qualifications, Experience & Assets

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Counselling, Psychotherapy, or a related field, plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience counselling children and youth; OR
  • College Diploma in Social Service Work, Child and Youth Work, Counselling, or a related field, plus a minimum of three (3) years of experience counselling children and youth.
  • Registered Social Worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
  • Experience and knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to interpret legislation and legal documents.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other staff and management.
  • Ability to relate effectively to community members and families.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of customary care and alternative dispute resolution.
