Dr. Johanne McCarthy is from the Onondaga Nation of Six Nations. She is an accomplished Naturopathic Doctor and professor for the Practical Nursing with Aboriginal Communities program for Mohawk College delivered at Six Nations Polytechnic Institute.
In spring of 2011 her career and livelihood was sidelined as she fought for her life to overcome a mysterious debilitating illness. She never expected to be on the other side of health care. After undergoing brain surgery her condition was discovered to be resulting from Lyme disease. As an Aboriginal patient with a mysterious illness, Dr. McCarthy reflects on the impact of misinformation, stereotypes and racism as a barrier to First Nations people receiving quality, culturally appropriate health care.
